Wedding Dress Shapes To Flatter Your Figure
Today’s feature is all about one of the questions I hear the most – what wedding dress style will be the most flattering for your body. I want every single Coco & Kate bride to look and feel amazing on their wedding day and when there are so many gorgeous wedding dresses to choose from, knowing what shape will suit your body can be a great way to start the search. So, let’s take a look at the gowns and the bodies they flatter…
A-line or Princess dresses are probably the most flattering gowns around and we have some superb designs from Stephanie Allin at Coco & Kate that are just perfection. These can hug your natural curves whilst offering support in the upper body and covering any areas you’d prefer to hide in the lower half. A slim A-line gown looks wonderful on petite brides and slightly fuller skirted styles are also perfect for tall brides too. We’re thrilled to stock wedding dresses by Tatyana Merenyuk at Coco & Kate and her signature ‘off the shoulder’ gowns with their soft A-line skirts are so romantic with a little less volume than some other designers.
Mermaid gowns, really show off your curves and if you’re blessed with an hourglass figure, this could be the dress shape you’ve been dreaming about. On the other hand, if you’re more pear shaped, this might be one to avoid and they can swamp a petite figure too.
Sleek and sophisticated sheath or column gowns are probably more flattering than you think, especially if you opt for a slightly heavier fabric, as these are less form fitting. Sheath dresses, like those in our Martina Liana edit, are wonderful for petite brides, as the clean lines will definitely elongate your figure. Slim figures (whatever height) and brides with an undefined waist also look ace in column wedding dresses.
Another style that fits perfectly between the fuller A-line designs and the snug sheath and column gowns is a straight-skirted style. Anna Campbell creates these in a way that no other designer can and as there’s still plenty of movement in the flowing skirt, they’re perfect for many brides, especially those looking for a form fitting style that’s a little more forgiving than a traditional column dress.
We also love empire line dresses at Coco & Kate so and this style is great for disguising an undefined waist or making the most of a smaller bust. However, tall brides should try other styles ahead of empire line gowns but if you’re pear shaped or apple shaped, I’d urge you to try an empire line wedding dress if you’d like to look lovely and lean.
Separates are definitely a great way to create the look that best suits your shape. Slim brides can choose a top with a high neckline for example whilst hourglass brides can opt for sweetheart neckline or a corset style top for maximum impact. When it comes to skirts, A-line skirts with dropped waists suit all shapes while slim brides can choose a full skirt to give the illusion of super feminine curves.
However, the most important thing is absolutely to come to your appointment with an open mind. You might find that a dress style you’ve never tried before suits you in a way you could never imagine and a shape you’d previously discounted is perfect the moment you slip it on.
